Peter Mallett was a merchant of Fayetteville, N.C., and New York City; and a Confederate Army officer and head of Confederate conscription in North Carolina. The collection includes business, military, and personal correspondence, chiefly 1850s to 1880s. Volumes include diaries, 1856, 1861, 1867-1881, and 1898; Civil War letters and lettercopy books from the conscription office in Raleigh, N.C.; a list of North Carolina merchants visited by Mallett, 1846-1849, with reports and credit ratings of each; and shipping accounts. Also included are thirteen family letters, 1785-1828, of Carleton Walker (the father of Mallett's son-in-law), an English immigrant to Wilmington, N.C.; and an autobiography (typed copy) of Peter Mallett (born 1744), immigrant from France to Wilmington, N.C., before the Revolution. Includes also the reminiscences of Margaret Isabella (Walker) Weber (born 1824), daughter of Carleton Walker (born circa 1777). and Caroline Mary (Mallett) Walker, who moved with her husband to Tennessee and later taught school in Nashville.
